Meta-Analysis shows Acupuncture and Moxibustion together is superior to Western Medicine in the treatment of Fibromyalgia. However, the authors conclude that many of the trials involved in this meta-analysis were of poor quality. They argue that we need better trials to truly determine the efficacy of Chinese Medicine for this condition.
One of the difficulties in studying Chinese Medicine is the heterogeneity of treatments, based on the different patterns of disharmony with which patients with Fibromyalgia and other diseases present. Does Chinese Medicine really work for Fibromyalgia? From my experience, yes indeed! But you don’t have to believe me. Try it for yourself. Compared with Western medicine, Chinese Medicine is much less expensive, and has side benefits like deep relaxation, and improvement in secondary complaints.
We acupuncturists are used to treating skeptical patients. While the placebo effect for medical treatments is real, it is not necessary for Chinese Medicine to work. Many patients in fact come to us with a nocebo, expecting it not to work, which hinders, but does not fully preclude the ability to benefit from Chinese Medicine. The fact that most patients who come to us do so with a skeptical eye, but still usually experience relief from their symptoms, is pretty strong evidence that it works.
Still, I do believe that more and more patients are benefiting from both the actual effects of Chinese Medicine AND the placebo effect produced from observing increasing numbers of others finding relief through this medicine.
